Ruth E. (Steely) Hays, of Independence, MO passed away on March 4, 2012. A visitation for Ruth will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 9, 2012 at Immanuel Baptist Church; 112 W. 23rd St., Independence, MO 64055. Services begin at 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow in Flag Springs, MO.
Ruth was born on March 23, 1916 to Susie (Keller) Steely and Elmer Steely in Forsyth, MO. She spent the first ten years of her life in Forsyth. When she was ten, she moved to Cedar County, near Stockton, MO. At the age of twenty, Ruth went to Kansas City, MO to work at Beamus Bags until she met and married Rev. Eugene Hays on January 24, 1942. As a minister’s wife, Ruth was active in the church. She played the piano, worked with the mission group of girls, and was part of the WMU. After her daughters were grown, she went to work in a nursing home in Maysville, MO, and remained there until moving to King City, where she found another nursing home to serve. Ruth’s husband, Eugene, preceded her in death in 1985. Also preceding Ruth in death are her four brothers; Lawrence, Marion, Floyd and Thayne Steely; three sisters; Mildred Gentry, Neva Cairnes, and Jean Cairnes; and two son-in-laws; Ronald Joy and David Holmes.
Ruth is survived by daughter Evelyn and Francis Blake of Independence, MO; daughter Phyllis Holmes of Leavenworth, KS; daughter Veda Joy of Fort Washington, MD; sister Lou Benham of Lockwood, MO; brother, Merle Steely and wife, Dottie of Branson, MO, Charlotte Steely of Springfield, MO; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
