Joyce Heaviland, 76, of Independence, MO passed away September 13, 2008 at Centerpoint Medical Center at 2:30 a.m. Joyce was born to Lehman and Edith Hansen at Conception Junction, MO on February 8, 1932. She attended Graceland College, Northwest Missouri State College, and earned a BS Degree in Education. She taught business classes at the Ritnour School District in St. Louis for 20 and one-half years. Joyce married Curtis Heaviland on January 8, 1971 in Maryville, MO. She was a life-long member of the Community of Christ Church, and most recently attended the East Alton Congregation where she served as an Elder. She passed away after a long illness of scleroderma. Joyce is survived by her husband, Curt Heaviland; daughter, Sherri (Raymond) Morrison; son, Lehman Heaviland (Kelly); grandchildren, Timothy and William Morrison, Lehman and Joy Heaviland; sister, Jean (Don) Davis of Independence, MO; brothers, Lehman Hansen of McClelland, IA and Paul (Jean) Hansen of Independence, MO; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Hansen of Omaha, NE; as well as many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by a half-brother, Emmett; sister-in-law, Betty Jean Hansen; and grandson, Andrew Heaviland. A memorial service will be held October 4, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at East Alton Community of Christ. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Outreach International or a charity of your choice.
