Helen Louise Settle

Lee's Summit

Helen Louise Settle, beloved mother, grandmother, and soon-to-be great-grandmother, passed away on August 12, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born on July 9, 1928, to Phillip A. and Rosalia (Griesenaur) Bryan in Franklin, Missouri.

A remarkable woman, Helen was known for her vivacious spirit and generous heart. Raised Catholic, Helen attended St. Peter and Paul High School in Boonville, Missouri. She partnered with her husband, JB Settle, as co-owner and office manager of Neal/Settle Printing, Inc., serving the community proudly for over 25 years. She demonstrated an unwavering tenacity and independence throughout her life, embracing every opportunity with enthusiasm.

Helen married James Boulton (JB) Settle Jr. on November 11, 1950, and was a devoted wife, caring for JB until his passing on February 18, 2013. A nurturing and loving mother, her proudest accomplishments included raising two children, Matt Settle and Cathy Callicoat, and caring for her grandchildren.

She had a passion for the outdoors, camping and fishing at Bennett Springs State Park in Lebanon, Missouri. She and JB retired just outside of the park, enjoying their evenings in each other’s company by the campfire, often with a martini or bourbon in hand. Together they created a wonderful country getaway for their family. An avid gardener, Helen loved to tend to her flowers, cultivating an array of beautiful plants, including lilies, begonias, strawberries, and coleus. She was also an excellent cook, celebrated for her fried chicken, hush puppies, spaghetti and meatballs, marble poundcake and pies. Those

fortunate enough to know her often enjoyed her delightful desserts, and she had a sweet spot for ice cream. Helen's zest for life was complemented by her love for animals, particularly her dogs, who brought her joy. Whether reading historical literature or passages from the Bible, she valued learning and reflection, often instilling those principles in her children and grandchildren.

In her later season of life, Helen moved back to the KC area where she connected closely with her new church family at Lakeland Community Church. Here she loved the people and the worship, living deeply into her faith while modeling for many how to finish life well in a spirit of generosity and gratitude.

Helen is survived by her son, Matt Settle (Beth Settle); daughter, Cathy Callicoat; and granddaughters, Carrie Callicoat (Nick Ball); Mackenzie Hartman (Kevin Hartman), and Kelsey Settle. Helen was blessed before her passing with the news of her first great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her husband, James B. Settle Jr.; her father, Phillip A. Bryan; her mother, Rosalia (Griesenaur) Bryan; and her son-in-law, Kelly Callicoat. She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
