Kathleen Hellstein

December 19, 1927 — October 1, 2010

Kathleen Emma Hellstein died on October 1, 2010, after a recent acute illness in Iowa City. American first, but Irish through and through, she was born Kathleen Emma Delaney, youngest child of "Mike" and "Zenie" Delaney on December 19, 1927. Though the depression created hardships, she grew up poor but happy in Macon, Mo. In Macon, she was surrounded by many loving cousins and family members. She moved to Kansas City, MO, her sophomore year in high school where she met Thomas Cashen Hellstein her junior year at Bishop Lillis High School. They kept in touch after high school (and the war) then married April 3, 1948. Tom and Kathleen have four children: Tim Hellstein, Peggy Gertner, Janet D'Arcy, and John Hellstein. Her husband of 62 years Tom, and her 4 children, survive her, as do her sister, Anna Beth, and her brother, Donald. She is preceded in death by her siblings: Bobby, Leslie, and Cecelia Delaney. Kathleen was also blessed by 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Always lively, faithful, caring, and selfless she is already missed by all who knew her. The funeral will be held at St. Cyril's, 11231 Chicago Ave., Sugar Creek, MO, at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 5th. There will be a viewing at the church prior to the mass from 5-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations should be directed to St. Cyril Church or the Sugar Creek Relief Fund. Then on St. Patrick's Day, please remember to do at least one Irish Jig in her memory.
