Herbert Eugene Hazelrigg

January 21, 1930 — April 26, 2025

Herbert Eugene Hazelrigg, a beloved figure in his community, passed away on April 26, 2025, at the age of 95 in Independence, Missouri. Born on January 21, 1930, in Buckner, Missouri, Herbert's journey through life was marked by perseverance, warmth, and a steadfast commitment to his principles.

As a young man Herbert made the decision to serve his country and enlisted into the U.S. Navy. He was aboard the USS Helena for several months alongside a few of his best friends, earning the rank of Seaman 1st Class. He was honorably discharged due to cancer after serving 3 years in the reserves.

Herbert dedicated over 40 years of his life working for Kansas City Power and Light, where his meticulous nature and strong work ethic shone brightly until his retirement in 1992. He was not only known for his professional dedication but also for the warm and inviting personality that drew people towards him. Friends and family often recalled his funny quips aka “Herbisms” and the laughter he shared, making moments spent with him truly unforgettable.

Life had its challenges for Herbert; at the young age of 22, he faced a life-altering diagnosis and underwent the amputation of his leg due to cancer. Yet, in what became a defining aspect of his character, he never allowed this hardship to diminish his spirit or slow him down. His courage in the face of adversity led to him being honored as the oldest living cancer survivor in his area—a testament to his indomitable will and positive outlook on life.

Herbert graduated from William Chrisman. His passions extended beyond his career; he loved to read and keep up with current events, found solace in fishing, was an avid sports enthusiast, and found joy in watching western movies. He also took pride in his coin collection and displayed the same passion for contributing to charities when given the chance, aiding those in need. Herbert was a strong man of faith and served the Lord at the First Christian Church alongside his wife Barbara for many years. His dedication to helping others reflected the compassion and warmth he carried throughout his life.

Herbert leaves behind a legacy of strength and kindness, cherished moments with loved ones, and an inspiring testament to resilience. As we gather to celebrate his life, we remember not only the man he was but the compassion and humor he generously shared with those around him. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

He is survived by his beloved bride of nearly 75 years, Barbara; children, Gary Hazelrigg (Linda), Karen Gier, Brian Hazelrigg (Tricia), Mark Hazelrigg (Tammey) and Angela Emerson (Bryan); 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 4 brothers.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Josephine (Tice) Hazelrigg and 7 siblings.
