Herbert Wayne "Herb" Schaefer

Herbert Wayne Schaefer, affectionately known as Herb, was born on November 12, 1957, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Alfred and Amalie (Wolfraum) Schaefer. He passed away on October 12, 2025, in Independence, Missouri, leaving behind a legacy of skill and passion that touched many lives.

Herb was a dedicated technical draftsperson, a profession he excelled in while often performing as an independent contractor. His meticulous attention to detail and unwavering work ethic made him respected among his peers and clients. His career not only reflected his talent but also his commitment to bringing visions to life through his designs.

Beyond his professional achievements, Herb had a deep love for the arts, particularly woodworking. He found joy in creating intricate pieces that showcased both his talent and creativity, and would often use these talents to help those who lived around him with their projects. Herb also took great pleasure in gardening, nurturing both vegetables such as tomatoes and squash, alongside beautiful flowers, especially roses. These hobbies allowed him to connect with nature and share the fruits of his labor with those he cherished. While not tending his garden or working on a project, Herb could be found in the kitchen improving his cooking and baking skills. As with his other hobbies, Herb couldn’t help but share with those around him, and many recall receiving homemade bags of cookies from him throughout the holiday season.

A devoted sports fan, Herb had a particular fondness for the K.U. basketball team and the Kansas City Chiefs, often sharing his enthusiasm and team spirit with those around him.

Herb is survived by many cherished friends and neighbors, who will remember him for his warm presence in the community and the joy he brought into their lives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Amalie Schaefer, and his brother, H. Stephen Schaefer, whose memories he carried with him throughout his life.

Herb's legacy will continue to thrive in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He leaves behind not only memories of his craftsmanship and passions but also a reminder of the importance of pursuing one’s interests and sharing joy with others.
