Major Dana S. Hickam, 71, Olathe, KS. died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at home. A memorial service will be held 2 pm, Sat. Dec. 4, 2004 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, 17920 W. 158th Street, Olathe, KS. A private burial was held at Brooking Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or Children�s Mercy Hospital. Dana was born Feb. 18, 1933, in Lexington, MO. He graduated from Northeast High School in 1951 before attending William Jewell College. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1953 and served a distinguished twenty years before retiring in 1973. During his career he received many decorations and medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the National Defense Service Medal, Airman�s Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Outstanding Unit Award, the Longevity Service Award with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon to list a few. Dana served as an Alderman for the City of Grandview from 1982 - 1984. He was the founder of Grandview�s annual celebration known as Harry�s Hay Days, a volunteer for the KCPT Channel 19 Auction for 10 years. He was a Past President & Lt. Governor of Southside Optimist Club in South KC, and a member of American Legion Post #0153, Olathe, KS. He enjoyed playing Santa Claus for children in KC and at Air Force bases all around the world. He loved children and donated all he could to them. Dana is survived by his wife, Joan Hickam, of the home; daughter Ann M. Holmes; and granddaughter Jessica Mann, both of Olathe, KS.
