Edgar McIntosh “Pete” Hill, 91, of Independence, MO passed away Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Carmel Hills Living Center. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2011 at Speaks. Burial in Mt. Washington Cemetery. Edgar was born January 15, 1920 in Independence, MO to Joseph Howard and Mary Eleanor (Hinde) Hill. He was a lifelong resident of Independence. Edgar was a veteran of WWII serving his country in the U.S. Army 33 months overseas in the African-European Campaigns. While in the military, he earned the Bronze Star Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster) for Meritorious Service and seven Bronze Battle Stars. Mr. Hill also earned a Bronze Star for Valor given with the Combat Infantry Badge. He was honorably discharged from the Army on September 26, 1945. He joined the Army Reserves in 1948, and later joined the JAG advancing to Chief Warrant Officer. Edgar received an Honorable Discharge on October 4, 1961. Mr. Hill was a Gold Card life member (60 years +) and Past Commander of Tirey J. Ford Post 21 of the American Legion, life member of the VFW Post 1738 and member of the 40 & 8 Society. He was a member of the Post Honor Guard for over 20 years providing full military honors for veteran’s funerals. Edgar served as Post Committeeman for the Salvation Army Ringers for over 15 years. He also served as member and Commander of the Independence Patriotic Council. Mr. Hill worked at the U.S. Post Office in Independence in many positions from rural mail carrier to Assistant Postmaster/Manager of Postal Services, retiring in 1977 after 37 years of employment. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and an Honorary Fellow of the Harry S Truman Library Institute for many years. Ed married Georgia K. Bear on April 19, 1952 in Kansas City. She preceded him in death in 2000, after 47 years of marriage. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Independence since 1954 where he served as Deacon, Elder, Elder Emeritus, Chairman of the Board, and chairman of various committees throughout the years. Mr. Hill was an avid golfer and enjoyed many cruises and vacations. Edgar is survived by his two daughters, Cynthia Kay Hill and husband Kevin Opperman, Annette Georgia Carter; granddaughter Amanda Kay Gatewood; nephew John Brian Hill. Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his brother John Howard “Jack” Hill.
