Joseph Michael “Joe” Hughes, 40 of Independence, MO, passed away Monday, January 25, 2010. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:00 a.m. Saturday, January 30, 2010 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 3726 Lee’s Summit Rd., Independence, MO 64055. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2010 at the church where the rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. Burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Joe was born December 2, 1969 in Kansas City, MO to John Joseph and Nancy (Stewart) Hughes, the youngest of six children. He was a graduate of O’Hara high school where he also did his student teaching and coached wrestling. Mr. Hughes went on to teach at Christian Brothers high school in Memphis, TN, St. Mary’s high school in Independence, MO, and most recently at Cristo Rey high school in Kansas City, MO. Joe’s life centered around education and teaching students. He was family oriented and was a wonderful son, brother and uncle. Joe was a loving husband and a hands-on dad to his kids! He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Marianne (Renz) Hughes; children Kolbe, Lucy, Brigid and Liam, mother Nancy Hughes, siblings Jane Zapien and husband Joe, Joan Blair, Mary Beth Rick, John Joseph Hughes II, Anne Roberts and husband Andy; and by a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many former students and friends. He was preceded in death by his father John Joseph Hughes; nephews Jacob Daniel Blair, Jared Gardner; niece Jennifer Lynn Stephens.
