Joy Hulmes

Joy Hulmes 98 of Independence passed away March 26, 2008 at Rosewood Health Center. Graveside services will be 10:00 am, Mon. Mar. 31, 2008 at Md. Grove Cemetery with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 am at Ridgewood Pleasant Heights Community of Christ Church. Visitation will be from 3:30-4:30 pm, Sunday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Joy was born on May 2, 1909 to Guy Ellsworth and Visa Carpender. She had two brothers, Guy Ellsworth and S. Paul. On August 17, 1931, she married Orville Henry Hulmes at the Stone Church in Independence, MO. They had two children, Patsy and David. Joy was preceded in death by Orville on Feb. 22, 2002 and David on Apr. 19, 2002. The family lived several places, since Orville was a manager with the J.C. Penney Company. They lived in Marshall, Richmond, Clinton, Jefferson City, Emporia, KS, Keokuk, IA and Independence, MO. Joy served as district Women’s leader in Keokuk and as Nauvoo District Women’s Leader, as well as served on the Women’s Council of the RLDS Church in Independence, now known as the Community of Christ Church. Joy also sang in the Independence Messiah Choir, under the first director, Paul Craig. Joy and family attended the Ridgewood Congregation where she played the organ and took part in the various congregational activities. She will be missed by all of her family and friends. She is survived by a daughter Patsy Hulmes of Independence, MO and by several other relatives and friends.
