Charles Gregory “Greg” Irwin, 77, of Lee’s Summit, MO was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, April 01, 2009 at the Kansas City Hospice House surrounded by his family. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 6, 2009 at First Baptist Church of Lee’s Summit. Visitation will be 2-5:00 p.m. Sunday, April 5, 2009 at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice House. Burial with full military honors in Floral Hills East Cemetery. Greg was born October 3, 1931 in St. Joseph, MO, the only child of Fred and Esther (Hill) Irwin. He graduated from Benton High School in 1949, and after attending St. Joseph Junior College for two years, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1951. Mr. Irwin proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict until 1955. Greg was united in marriage to Sharon Donovan on September 1, 1956. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1959. Greg began his engineering career at Bendix Corp., later working for Western Electric as a design engineer, and for AT&T as an engineering manager before retiring in 1992. Prior to retiring he was involved in several professional organizations including Maecon. Greg was an active and faithful member of First Baptist Church in Lee’s Summit since 1972. He was ordained as a deacon in 1983 and served on many committees. Mr. Irwin loved studying the bible and teaching a Men’s Bible Fellowship class. Greg was an avid railroad supporter and a member of the Midwest Highspeed Rail Association and National Association of Railroad Passengers. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. Greg loved the outdoors, spending time wintering in Florida, fishing, hunting, camping, boating, and canoeing. One favorite pastime was spending time at his A-frame cabin at lake Pomme de Terre with his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Sharon Irwin; daughter Rebecca Leonard and husband Craig, son Mike Irwin and wife Donna, daughter Anne Carter and husband Jim; grandchildren Jacob, Emily, Tyler, Katie, Megan, Mitchell, Chase and Savannah; great-grandchildren Jackson and Dylan; sister-in-law Betty Walker; nieces and nephews Kenny Severe, Dick Severe, Pat Teaney, Mickey Boydston; and several cousins; and by many loyal and dedicated friends.
