Jack Anthony Neal, a beloved figure in the hearts of many, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, in Independence, Missouri, at the age of 93. Jack was born to Clifford and Irene (Kruppa) Neal on November 14, 1931, in Leavenworth, Kansas.
As a young man Jack proudly served in the United States Army, a period of his life that reflected his commitment and strong sense of duty.
Jack was a devoted baker for over 35 years at The Cake Box and he brought joy to countless customers with his delicious creations. His skills in the kitchen were matched only by his friendly nature; he was reserved, yet he had the ability to engage in conversation with anyone. Friends and acquaintances alike were drawn to his gentle spirit, and it is no exaggeration to say that everyone loved him.
In his personal time, Jack found joy in various hobbies. Whether it was casting a line into the tranquil waters while fishing or competing on the bowling lanes. His love for bowling saw him participate in numerous leagues over the years, creating bonds and friendships that lasted a lifetime. Many also fondly recall his days spent at his cabin on Truman Lake, filled with laughter and treasured moments shared with family and friends.
Each day, without fail, Jack would rise early and look forward to his 6:30 am coffee dates with friends at Hy-Vee, an event that was as much about camaraderie as it was about the coffee. He also enjoyed the moments spent with his wife, Barbara at Ameristar, where they delighted in playing the slot machines together, sharing laughter and creating memories together. Jack’s love, laughter, and gentle nature will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Barbara (Slay) Neal; children, Cheryl Vick, Leroy Neal, Glenda VanNess (Ray), John Rieder (Stephanie) and Bridget Wagner; brother, Earl Neal (Caroline); 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Irene Neal; daughter, Dawn Eckstrom and step-daughter, Judy Rieder.
