James Vincent "Mutt" McQueen

James Vincent "Mutt" McQueen, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on July 15, 2025, at his residence in Independence, Missouri, following a battle with cancer. He was born on January 25, 1947, in Evanston, WY, to Wesley McQueen Sr. and Leona (Derks) McQueen.

Jim was a graduate of Jefferson High School in Conception Junction, Missouri. In his youth, he played basketball, track, and baseball. Later, he earned an associate's degree from DeVry Tech School.

In May of 1966, Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force, embarking on a commendable journey in service to his country. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served honorably as a staff sergeant until his discharge at McGuire Air Force Base in May of 1970.

On April 8, 1972, Jim married the love of his life, Jane Marie Loch, in Louisburg, KS. Together, they created a loving home, nurturing their family with steadfast devotion. Jim was a proud father to his three sons. He dedicated much of his free time to supporting his children, whether it was coaching baseball teams, attending countless baseball games, basketball games, school plays, or leading school and church functions. Throughout all these activities, he played the role as dad for not only his boys, but for countless others who were not as fortunate to have a positive male influence in their lives. Many fondly remember him as packing up the white station wagon with the family and baseball equipment, circling the neighborhood to pick up teammates, and heading to a practice or game.

Dedicated and hard-working, Jim served 40+ years as an electronics technician for American Business Machines/Tipton Systems. He served on the school board for St. Stephen’s Academy and was an active member of the Minute Circle Community Center, receiving a volunteer of the year award for his role as treasurer for that organization.

He also cherished his role as “grandpa Mutt.” His grandkids will remember him attending baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, or cheer events, dominating ping-pong game, playing hide-and-seek, serving as the “big bad wolf”, or being train conductor.

Jim found joy and satisfaction in tending to his vegetable garden and flowers. He also pursued woodworking with passion, crafting pieces that reflected his meticulous attention to detail and creativity. Jim joined Jane in welcoming all to their home to visit, share meals, watch Royals or Chiefs games, or celebrate holidays. Mutt’s perfect mix of calm, warmth and humor made their house a popular stop for many. Also, he was renowned by his family and friends for his bbq skills, and served up everything from the “Mutt-burger” to pork chops.

Throughout his life, Jim held his faith close to his heart. He was a member of St. Michael’s, Our Lady of Peace, and St. Mark’s Parish.

Jim is deeply mourned by his family, including his wife, Jane McQueen; his sons Mike (Andrea), Chris McQueen, and Pat McQueen (Scott Carmack); and his grandchildren, Chase, Kassidy, Kian, Miles, Graham, Lila, and Evie. He is also survived by his brother Wes (Carol), and many nieces and nephews who remember him fondly. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley McQueen Sr. and Leona McQueen; his sisters, Joann Wolfer (Jim) and Marylou Caenepeel (Albert); parents in law, Damon and Anna Loch; and his niece, Jennifer Elliott.

A visitation will be held from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at St. Mark Catholic Church in Independence, MO, followed by Mass starting at 11:00 AM. His inurnment will follow at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Raytown, MO.

Jim leaves behind a legacy of selflessness, love, hard work, and a commitment to family that will inspire those who knew him. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to call him family or friend.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Bishop Sullivan Center, in honor of Jim’s lifelong commitment to faith and service.
