Our dear mother, Janet (Jan) Kay Slaybaugh, age 80, Lee’s Summit, MO rejoined her heavenly family, earned her celestial wings, and peacefully passed on December 6, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza following a devastating stroke that was not survivable.
Born on May 28, 1943, in Creston, IA, to Verla Dean and Paul Varner. Jan graduated from Clearfield High School in 1961. She married Jerry Neil Slaybaugh on August 22, 1964.
A beautician for 50 years; during which time she owned her own beauty shop. As a beautician she forged many lifelong relationships that have continued to this day. A beacon of warmth, she was an extraordinary mother, grandmother, and great grandmother consistently offering unwavering support. Jan possessed a beautiful heart, cultivating numerous friendships and becoming a well-loved member of the Sycamore Hills, Christ United Methodist Church, Drumm Farm Villas, and John Knox Village communities over the years.
Jan never remarried after the loss of her husband Jerry in 2005. While her family mourns her departure, they find solace in the knowledge that Jan and Jerry are now reunited. Jan was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Jerry. Survivors include her daughter, Lori (Bob) Gregor of Lenexa, KS; son, Greg (Heather) Slaybaugh of Blue Springs, MO; brother, Brad (Anna) Varner; beloved niece Bobbi Jo Bartles, Clarinda, IA; grandchildren, Anna Slaybaugh (Jay Martins), Chip (Catherine) Slaybaugh, Felecia (Nolan) Gotway, Charlie Slaybaugh, Kayla Slaybaugh, Libby Gregor, and Sara Gregor; great-grandchildren Violet Slaybaugh, Madelena Stewart, and Tatum Martins and many nieces and nephews. A profoundly devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and above all, friend. Jan will be remembered eternally, and her absence keenly felt.
A celebration of Jan’s Life will be on December 10, 2023 from 9:00am-11:00am, followed by a memorial service from 11:00am-12:00pm.
