Janice Agnew "Jan" McCormack
Janice Agnew "Jan" McCormack, 91, of the Kansas City area, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri.
Jan was born on November 6, 1934, in Scotia, California, to William and Catherine Matthews. She was one of two children and grew up with a strong sense of determination and adventure that would define her throughout her life.
Jan proudly served her country in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged.
She enjoyed a long career at the Ford Assembly Plant, where she worked as an inspector until her retirement. Jan made history as the second woman hired at the plant, paving the way for others who followed.
While working at Ford she earned her bachelor's degree from Park University, demonstrating her lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.
After retirement, Jan embraced her love of the water by living aboard a sailboat in San Diego, California, and later in Kemah, Texas, before eventually returning to the North Kansas City area to be closer to family. She found great joy in sailing and was happiest near the water. She also loved biking, swimming, and kayaking, always seeking her next outdoor adventure. A devoted "Parrot Head," Jan rarely missed an opportunity to enjoy the music of Jimmy Buffett, whose songs reflected her carefree spirit and love of life.
Above all else, Jan treasured her family. She was lovingly known as "Granny," a name that reflected the deep affection shared between her and those she loved most.
Jan is survived by her children, Michael (Nikki) McCormack, Gordon "Dutch" (Jan) McCormack, and Robert "Scott" McCormack; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris) Satterfield, Angela Foreman, Matthew Yates, and Michael Yates; numerous great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Catherine Matthews; her daughter, Vicki Yates; her son, Douglas McCormack; her grandchildren, Bobby McCormack and Britney Gonzales; her daughter-in-law, Baerbel McCormack; and her sister, Cathy.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Jan's life during a visitation on Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th Street South, Independence, Missouri 64055.
