George Jensen

June 19, 1946 — May 16, 2011

George William Jensen, age 64, a former resident of Independence, Missouri and more recently of Blue Springs, died Monday, May 16, 2011.

He was born June 19, 1946 in Independence, the son of Milton G. Jensen and Clarice (Allred) Jensen. George married Victoria Hernandez Jensen on October 22, 1971 in Lexington, Missouri. George attended and later taught at Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington. Though he earned a degree in business from Bemijdi State University, his passion was history; his knowledge of the subject was encyclopedic. George’s first job was operating the train ride, at his father’s 24 Highway Kiddieland; they continued to work together on a variety of business ventures. Devoted throughout his life to public service, George was a member of the Independence Eastview Lion’s Club since 1975. He served as district governor and president. George was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Independence, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. During and after his daughters’ time at William Chrisman High School, George founded the Music Boosters to support arts activities at the school. Along with his parents, George had a lifelong interest in collecting and restoring antique cars. George was also a talented painter and basket weaver, selling thousands of baskets with his wife, Victoria, at craft shows throughout the region during the 1980s and 90s.

George Jensen was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Clarice, and a brother, Robert Lee Billings.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria; daughters Christina Jensen and husband Matthew Agoglia, and Clarice Jensen; brother Donald Billings and wife Steffie; nieces Vicky (Billings) Campbell and husband Dave, Mindy (Billings) Hooks and husband Robert, Kathy Billings-Massing and husband Britt; and many great-nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:00 am on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church; 600 N. Liberty St., Independence, MO with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery. A Visitation will be held at Carson-Speaks Chapel; 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO on Friday from 6:00-8:00 PM.
