John Holden Boyd

Nov 16, 1933 — Oct 27, 2026

John Boyd, Sr., a beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2026 at his home in Independence, MO. He was born on November 16, 1933, to Everett Scott Boyd Sr., and Chrystal (Teeter) Boyd.

John was born in Alexander, Kansas, and moved with his family at the age of 12 to Independence, MO. After graduating from William Chrisman High School, he continued his education at Graceland College and Northwest Missouri State University.

John's favorite work experience was as a foreman and an iron worker. These jobs provided him the opportunity to travel many places, including Europe, Asia, and throughout the United States.

John will be dearly missed by his surviving family members and friends. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. John is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Maggie Carter Boyd; sons, John Boyd Jr (Sandi) and Rick Boyd (Lori); grandchildren, Adam Boyd, Eric Boyd, Sarah Boyd, and Jenna Boyd; brother, Everett Scott Boyd, Jr.; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends worldwide. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older sister, Janine Knudsen.

John led a remarkable life filled with diverse experiences and meaningful connections. He found fulfillment in teaching Sunday School, reading non-fiction, collecting ships and nautical memorabilia, playing volleyball, and barefoot water skiing. John’s greatest skill was lifting heavy objects and carrying them long distances. Known for his listening ear, sharp intellect and dry sense of humor, John never hesitated to strike up conversations with strangers and left a lasting impression on all he met. He was baptized into the Community of Christ (formerly Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) as a youngster and served as an Elder, Sunday school teacher, camp counselor, and do-whatever-is-needed helper. He had a giant generous heart for those less fortunate than himself. He insisted on wearing jeans to church to ensure that anyone visiting would not feel out of place if their wardrobe wasn’t typical Sunday attire.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to The New Walnut Park congregation of Community of Christ, St. Luke’s Hospice, or the charity of your choice.
