Colonel John E. Sutton, 100, passed peacefully at home on August 22nd, 2026. He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Dana (Wendelburg) Sutton. Born in Hutchinson, Kansas, he was a graduate of West Point Military Academy in 1949 and subsequently served 30 years in the U.S. Army. His passions included flying his Great Lakes biplane, collecting Lionel trains, volunteering at the National World War I Museum, and attending the Kansas City Ballet and Opera.
Visitation with the family will be Thursday, September 10, from 5-7 pm at Carson-Speaks (1501 W Lexington Ave, Independence, MO 64052). Inurnment with military honors will be at West Point Military Academy National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National World War I Museum (Click here to donate to WWI Museum) or the Kansas City Ballet (Click here to donate to KC Ballet)
