Verna Mae Johnson, 81, of Independence, MO, passed away peacefully at home on June 16, 2015. Family will greet friends on Friday, June 19, from 6-8pm, at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave. A funeral service will be Saturday, June 20, at 2pm, with burial following in Hill Crest Cemetery.
Verna was born June 6, 1934, in Chariton County, MO, to George and Tressie (Scott) Clayburg. She is survived by her two children: Carol Johnson of Greenwood, MO and Robert Johnson of Rolla, MO; granddaughter, Megan Johnson, and great-granddaughter Gracelyn Hales, both of Huntsville, AL; sisters, Nadine Baskett, Beverly White, and Judy Dennis, of Kansas City, MO, and Velma Hoskins, of Crystal Lakes, MO. Verna is also survived by her grand-pets Duchess, Kenny, and Queenie, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and friends, especially her former coworkers.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents, George and Tressie Clayburg; husband, Clyde Johnson; brother, George Junior Clayburg; and sister, Peggy Rigby.
Verna graduated from Salisbury High School in 1952. She then moved to Kansas City. She married Clyde Johnson on November 1, 1958. She later went to work for H&R Block and was employed over 47 years until her retirement early last year. While employed for H&R Block, Verna was recognized many times for her client retention rate and was an instructor for the H&R Block Income Tax Course.
In 2011 Verna was named the Outstanding Older Worker of Eastern Jackson County and competed at the Governor’s Mansion for Outstanding Older Worker of the State of Missouri. In August 2012, Verna was an honoree of the Buck O’Neil Legacy Seat during a Royals game at Kauffman Stadium.
Verna loved planting flowers until she became ill. She also loved watching hummingbirds in her dining room and on her front porch. Verna was an avid sports fan and passed her love of sports to both of her children. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the National Kidney Foundation in her memory.
