Bishop Alan C. Johnstone, 78, Independence, MO passed away Sept. 26, 2011. A memorial service will be held at 3 pm, Sunday, Oct. 2 at the Stone Church, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64052; cremation. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Outreach International, 129 W. Lexington Ave., 2nd Floor, Independence, MO 64050.
Alan was born Jan. 13, 1933 in Innisfail, Alberta, Canada. In high school he was known as “Smiley” for his happy demeanor. He earned his Masters degree in Accounting at Queens University. He was a Bishop in the Community of Christ and was currently still working for the church performing audits. Over his career from 1960 to 1998 he was a CPA for the church. He was a member of The Optimist Club of Independence, the Canadian Institute of Accountants, and served on the Board for Meals on Wheels.
Alan is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years Zola E. Johnstone, of the home; daughter Debra Johnstone Bratberg and husband Jay, Holmen, WI; son Wayne A. Johnstone and wife Barbara, Junction City, KS; brother Morris T. Johnstone and wife Doris, Lloydminister, Alberta, Canada and grandchildren Natalie & Alison Johnstone; Kaytlyn & Lyndsey Bratberg.
