Katherine Louise Swayne, affectionately known as Kathy, embarked on her final journey on January 11, 2026, at the age of 68 in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Born on September 22, 1957, in Trenton, Missouri, to Charles Franklin Shockey and Veda Mae (Wood) Shockey, Kathy filled the world with laughter and light, establishing an enduring legacy of love and joy.
She navigated her life with grace and determination, graduating from Fort Osage High School in the class of 1976. Kathy worked diligently to ascend the ranks in her career, eventually becoming a line supervisor at ATK, now Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. Her professional journey exemplified perseverance and commitment, truly reflecting her tenacity and work ethic.
Kathy cherished the simple pleasures of life. A stellar cook and baker, she was renowned for her delectable pot roast, tuna and other casseroles, and the exquisite array of breads and sweet treats she crafted during the holiday season. Her culinary skills and passion for nurturing were evident not only in her kitchen but also in her beloved flower garden. With her exceptional green thumbs, Kathy could breathe life into the most forlorn of plants, nurturing them to bloom and thrive.
A spirited individual at heart, Kathy loved to laugh and sought out leisurely activities that allowed her to embrace her vivacious spirit. Among her favorite pastimes was spending time with her lifelong friends, affectionately known as the "Yayas," gathered comfortably on her patio, sharing stories, laughter, and cherished memories. She found joy in taking car drives, often meandering through her old neighborhoods, particularly Sugar Creek and the Susquehanna region of Independence. Whether it was listening to rock and roll or country music, Kathy could frequently be seen dancing with abandon, embodying a true lover of life.
Kathy's warmth and affection extended to her family, which includes her beloved daughter, Brandy Rue (Shawn); her sons, Michael Lambrecht (Jessica Trumble) and Samuel Swayne (Flavio Dezan-Monti); and her grandsons, Brandon Rue (Emily) and Jacob Rue (Tori). The arrival of her great-granddaughter, Baby May May Harper-Rue, brought a delightful sparkle to her life, enriching the tapestry of family connections she so deeply valued. She is also survived by her sister, Kimberly Mautino, and many dear friends who will carry her spirit forward.
Though Kathy’s earthly presence has departed, she is reunited with her cherished husband, Ronald Edward “Ron” Swayne; her beloved parents, Charles Franklin Shockey and Veda Mae Shockey; her sister, Christine McPherson; and her loyal canine companion, Bonnie. Their memories will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who loved her.
The warmth of Kathy’s spirit and the joy she spread will continue to resonate through the lives she touched. In her honor, friends and family are welcome to pay their respects during a visitation at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, Missouri, on January 16, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
