Kenneth J. Veerhusen passed away on April 12, 2026, in Independence, Missouri at the age of 78. Born on September 3, 1947, in Lake City, Iowa, Ken lived a life marked by a deep love for learning and his family.
Ken’s journey began in Iowa where he was raised and later graduated from Fort Dodge High School. After high school, Ken served honorably in the U.S. Marines, doing two tours in Vietnam, followed by twelve years of service in the National Guard, demonstrating his dedication to his country. Upon returning to civilian life, Ken pursued further education, at Iowa Central Community College and University of Northern Iowa, that would pave the way for his future endeavors.
Ken devoted the majority of his professional life to the box factory that eventually became known as the International Paper Company. Starting from an entry-level position, Ken took on many roles, his diligence and leadership skills led him to the role of production scheduler. His expertise and calm demeanor made him an invaluable part of the factory’s team, respected by his colleagues and community alike.
A man of few words, Ken’s intelligence shone through in both his professional and personal life. Those close to him knew his playful side well, he was known for his cooky sense of humor and liked creating nicknames for those around him. He was an avid reader, mostly passionate about history, but still found great joy in books that spanned any and all topics. Ken also enjoyed playing old war board games and watching classic television shows, including westerns, war movies, Seinfeld, Star Trek, and Texas Ranger.
Traveling was another joy that Ken shared with his late wife, Wilma. Together, they explored many places, creating memories that would last a lifetime. His love for Wilma and the adventures they had remain a cherished part of his legacy.
Ken will be remembered for his quiet intelligence, his ability to bring a smile through his playful nicknames, and his dedication to those he loved. He leaves behind the memory of a man who valued knowledge, patience, and the simple joys of life.
Ken is survived by his children, Stacey Andersen (Dusty), Nick Veerhusen (Catherine); grandchildren, Josh Faley (Hayley), Matthew Faley, Ayriana Veerhusen, Jaxson Veerhusen, Easton Diffey and Baleigh Diffey; one great-grandchild, Evelyn Faley;brother, Roger Veerhusen and sister, Kelly Bender and his beloved furry companions, Coco and Kiwi.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 55 years, Wilma; and his parents, Raymond and Rose (Scott) Veerhusen.
