Dwight Kerns

Dwight Truman Kerns, 91, of Independence, MO passed away on Friday, May 17, 2013 peacefully in his sleep.

Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Carson-Speaks Chapel; 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO. 64052. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mt. Washington Cemetery.

Dwight was born in East Galesburg, IL on November 2, 1921. He graduated from High School in St. Louis, MO. A veteran, Dwight enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 5, 1940. He was trained and qualified as an aircraft mechanic and flight engineer. After the start of WWII, he served with several training squadrons until he shipped out to North Africa. He served in North Africa and moved to Italy as part of the 15th Army Air Force where he served as a crew chief in the 776th Bombardment Squadron 464th Bomb Group. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Master Sergeant. After this military service, he returned and completed his certification in aircraft airframe and power plant mechanics from the Parks College in St. Louis. Dwight was married to Freida L. Kerns (Austin) in St. Elmo, IL on September 3, 1948; they were married 57 years. Dwight completed his career in aviation by working as a Flight Engineer for Trans World Airlines for over 30 years, retiring in November, 1984. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and was a past member of the Masonic Lodge in Quincy, IL. For many years he was actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America, holding numerous adult leader positions including Sachem in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Dwight was also a member of the Blue Ridge Christian Church.

Dwight is survived by his two children, Franklin C. Kerns and his wife Charlotte, Harold A. Kerns and his wife Laura; grandchildren, Zachary, Austin and Brandon; step grandchildren, Amy, Tim, Laura; step great grandchildren, Preston, Jeremiah, Ethan and Bethany; and additional nieces, nephews, family and friends. Dwight is preceded in death by his wife, Freida L. Kerns (Austin); parents, Jasper F. and Rebecca C. (Hoobler) Kerns; sisters, Clethra Divinagracia, Frankie Mae Dodge and Audrey Farlow’ as well as his brothers, Alonzo, Donald, William and Jasper Kerns, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heart of America Council Boy Scouts of America or Blue Ridge Christian Church.
