John “Jack” Wesley Kirkbride, Jr., 89, Independence, MO passed away March 28, 2011 at his home surrounded by loving family. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am, Sat., April 2, 2011 at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, 727 N. Main, Independence, MO 64050. Visitation will begin at 9 am before the service. Jack was born Aug. 10, 1921 to John Wesley Sr. and Grace E. (Ross) Kirkbride in Maryville, MO. He was raised in Ravenwood, MO. He was a U.S. Marine veteran who served in WWII in the Pacific Theater. He later served in the Kansas National Guard. Following the war, he worked as a milk delivery driver, delivered newspapers, repaired and serviced juke boxes, sorted mail at the post office, drove a street car, and drove trucks for the Riss Truck Line, Campbell 66 and was a dispatcher for Yellow Freight System. He retired from Yellow Freight in 1984. He and his wife Allana then moved to Princeton, MO where they owned a small farm. Jack loved his vegetable garden, cows and his adoring Shepherd mix, Princess. While in Princeton, he was employed by the Mercer County Sheriff’s Dept. and the Princeton School District driving a school bus. Eventually they returned to Independence in July, 1993 where he worked at Wal-Mart for thirteen years and retired from there in 2007. Jack was known for his giving and caring nature and was always available to help others. He was #1 to his children and grandchildren.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and brother Max. He is survived by his wife of nearly sixty-two years Allana Kirkbride; son Dan and wife Marilee, daughters Kitty and husband David, Chris, Nanette and husband Mike, thirteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren and brother Rex.
