Richard E. Kitchen, 73, Independence, MO passed away Nov. 28, 2011. Visitation will be 6 – 8 pm, Thursday at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Services will be 2 pm, Friday, Dec. 2 at the chapel. A graveside service with Full Military Honors will be at noon, Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Carrollton, MO.
Richard was born Sept. 10, 1938 to Kenneth and Lillian (Walker) Kitchen in Moberly, MO. He graduated from Carrollton High School. He is a U.S. Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post #21. He was a national sales rep. for NAPA for over forty years and retired Oct. 1, 2003. He was very active in the Volunteers in Police Service Program (VIPS) from 2004 through 2011. His main focus was the Child ID Program. He attended meetings every month and when sign-up sheets for community projects were passed around you could count on Richard to be one of the first to sign up. Between 2007 and 2011 he put in 710 hours of volunteer work for VIPS.
Richard was preceded in death by daughter Deena Marie Grace Burkett; brothers Sonny Kitchen and Thomas Kitchen. He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years Rose Kitchen, of the home; son Richard A. Kitchen and wife Jill, Bates City, MO; sisters Phyllis Olvera, Independence, MO; Betty Orsak and husband Frank, Lee’s Summit, MO; Beverly Nissen, Sedalia, MO; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
