Jack Langley

May 29, 1931 — July 17, 2014

Jack Langley, age 83, of Montgomery, TX, went to live with The Lord on July 17, 2014. He was born on May 29, 1931, in Waynesboro, MS.
As a young boy he, his dad and twin-brother, Joe, worked many long hours as loggers, cutting and hauling “stumps” as they were called, to the local pulp mill. In school, Jack loved the game of football and wore the number 32 jersey as a cornerback on the Waynesboro High School football team. He was tagged by his school mates as the “friendliest boy” in the class. In the summer between his junior and senior year he came to Atherton, MO, to work in the potato fields. After graduation in 1949, he moved to Independence, MO.
He spent several years as a Scout Leader for both Cubs and Boy Scouts as his son Jeff was growing up. In later years, he and Jeff spent time together working side-by-side in the Coast Guard Auxiliary teaching coastal navigation at Fort Osage High School. His love of the water spanned many years, not only in boating but fishing and camping with family and friends.
He worked for many years at Clark Manufacturing in Atherton and concluded his career as a certified welder and boilermaker with the Tennessee Valley Authority in Clarksville, TN. While living in Clarksville, he was an active member of the Moose Lodge serving as Secretary for several years. In addition to his union trades, he was considered by all to be a “jack of all trades” as there was nothing he couldn’t do when it came to mechanical repairs, home construction or repairs around the house, plumbing, electrical, painting, etc. – anything and everything! He did handyman repair work as a side job and was loved by each customer he did work for. He had a hard time completing a project and moving on to the next customer as the “widows” kept finding and asking him to make more and more repairs beyond what he was initially hired to do. And they would tell their friends, and their friends would tell their friends, etc., etc. He was finding himself having to turn people away.
Jack was a baptized member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was ordained a Priest in the order of Aaronic priesthood. In retirement, he became involved with Stephens Ministry and enjoyed visiting various nursing homes providing fellowship and one-to-one Christian care to residence going through hard times.
In 1992, he and Cheryl decided to sell their home in Independence and purchase an RV to travel the countryside. They visited the states of Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and up the Eastern coast into New England. After numerous trips to the Rio Grande Valley, they decided to put down roots and make Montgomery, TX, their permanent residence.
Jack is survived by his wife of 24 years, Cheryl, daughters Linda Chase of Independence, MO, Carolyn Brown of Grain Valley, MO and son Jeffrey Langley and wife June of Camdenton, MO; two step-daughters, Cami Pickering and husband Joseph of Windsor, NH and Tiffany Whitman of Holyoke, MA; grandchildren Tim Chase and wife Michele of Buckner, MO; Josh Chase of Blue Springs, MO; Joann Pickering and Joe Pickering of Windsor, NH. Great-granddaughters Miranda Landis of Independence, MO, Lauren Thurman and husband Greg of Independence, MO and Hailey Chase of Buckner, MO. Great-great-grandchildren Lyrik Dinwiddie and Aiden Thurman of Independence, MO. He is also survived by three sisters, Lou Davis of Pascagoula, MS, Edith Fay Herron and husband Jim of Grand Bay, AL, and Shirley West and husband Wayne of Waynesboro, MS, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father John Floyd Langley, mother Fannie Langley, fraternal twin brother Joe Langley and infant sister Luberta Langley.
A celebration of life and memorial service will be held at Speaks Buckner Chapel, 300 Adams Street, Buckner, MO, on Saturday, August 16, at 10:00 a.m., with burial to follow in the Buckner Hills Cemetery.
