Lelah “Nadine” Umphreys passed away Sunday, October 19, 2025 at NorthCare Hospice. The family will greet friends from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., Thursday, October 23, 2025 at the Speaks Buckner Chapel followed immediately by a graveside service at Buckner Hill Cemetery. Nadine was born on January 14,1930, in Louisburg, Missouri and spent her formative years in the rural community attending Louisburg High School until her senior year following a fire consuming the building. She finished her schooling in the nearby community of Buffalo, Missouri. At 5’9” she was an avid basketball player for her high school team. Nadine had a short marriage to a hometown boy but ended shortly in divorce. Nadine took to the road and moved to Kansas City and found work at the H.D. Lee’s jean company. In the active area of garment district of Kansas City is where she landed the catch of a lifetime and the love of her life Donn B. Umphreys. Nadine was fond of travel following her catch to Texas where her husband to be, was drafted and sent to for his training into the United States Army. On their way the two stopped in Guymon, Oklahoma and became wed on the courthouse steps. After their time in the Army the two returned to Kansas City and onto Buckner MO to raise their family. Nadine was a stay-at-home mother of three and later worked at Fort Osage Junior High as a lunch lady. Nadine volunteered to the youth of Buckner, through Cub Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, and supported the Junior Firefighters of the Osage Fire Protection District. Nadine is survived by her daughters Gale L. Norris (Curtis), Deloris S. Carter (Ed)and a brother Frank W. Miller (Ellen) Proceeded in death by her husband Donn B. Umphreys Sr., Son Donn B. Umphreys Jr., Parents Jesse L. Miller and Hattie M. Miller, brother Fred Miller, sisters MyrtleAnn Jones and Doris Williams. Nadine was blessed with 18 grandchildren , 29 great grandchildren , 5 great great grandchildren. Each holding a precious place in her heart.
