Vernon T. Lewis, 90, Independence, MO, passed away Saturday, February 12, 2011 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00pm on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at the Open Arms Community of Christ Church, 1101 W. Walnut, Independence, MO 64050.
Vernon was born September 11, 1920 in Kansas City, MO the son of George W. and Nettie (Deheer) Lewis. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, in the infantry units in North Africa and Italy. Vernon retired in 1984 from the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier. He was a member of the Postal Union and past member of the VFW. Vernon enjoyed reading his newspapers, gardening and going out to a dinner and movie every Friday night with his wife.
He was preceded in death by his daughters Vicki LaMonte, and Kathy Lewis; three brothers and three sisters and his parents.
Survivors include his loving wife and best friend Elaine Lewis of the home; children, Greg T. Lewis, Rex K. Lewis and his wife Kathy, Tami E. Shull and her husband Tom, Sherri L. Griffin and her husband Vernon, Chris S. Lewis; and additional grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and family.
