Barbara E. Lingenfelter, 90, Independence, MO passed away Wed., Oct. 8, 2008 after a brief illness. Services will be at 1 pm, Sat., Oct. 11, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church, 400 W. Maple, Independence, MO. Visitation will begin at noon prior to the service at the church. Committal services with Full Military Honors will be at 9 am, Monday, Oct. 13 at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the American Cancer Society or The Shriners Children’s Hospital.
Barbara was born on March 27, 1918 in Maxwell, IA to George Franklin Lingenfelter, Sr. and Myrtle Elizabeth (Weigold) Lingenfelter. She graduated from Leavenworth High School and was the first woman to pass the tests for the state of Michigan to enroll in the Women’s Army Corps. She served in WW II as a Corporal, being honored with medals for Campaign, (3) Good Conduct, and Victory. After serving her country she worked for the Government at the Defense Mapping Agency, where she retired. After retirement she remained an active member of the First United Methodist Church, American Business Women, Needle Guild, Shrine and Eastern Star.
Barbara was preceded in death by her father, mother, and three brothers. She is survived by nieces Mary S. Papenhausen and Claudia Ellano; nephew George F. Lingenfelter III and his wife; two great nieces and two great nephews and their spouses; three great-great-nieces and four great-great-nephews.
