Independence

Lloyd J. Briggs, 96, of Independence Missouri, passed away Wednesday August 9th at his home. He was born July 15, 1927 in Fairfield Iowa to James and Thelma Briggs. Lloyd earned a Bachelor’s degree from UMKC, and also served in the United States Navy V5 program. He married Maxine Zwonitzer from Huntsville Missouri on December 31st (New Year’s Eve) of 1950.

He was then drafted into the United States Marine Corps and served in the Korean conflict. After his service, Lloyd worked for several companies in the Kansas City area as an accountant, finally retiring from Farmland Industries in 1990. After retirement, he and his wife Maxine traveled often, visiting many states in the US as well as enjoying several cruises to interesting parts of the world such as the Panama Canal and the Mediterranean Sea.

Lloyd was very dedicated to community service, and gave freely of his time and energy to the YMCA, the Chicago and Alton Depot organization in Independence, Eastgate Christian Church, and especially the Boy Scouts of America. Lloyd truly loved working with the boys and leaders of various Cub Packs and Scout Troops over the years, and spent much of every summer at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation as a Camp Commissioner. He was a long time member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, and had the honor of being elevated to Chieftain in 2000.

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 73 years, Maxine; sons Gregory, of Independence, and Michael, of Lubbock Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America, or a community service organization of your choice. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 21, at 10:30am at Eastgate Christian Church, 4010 S. River in Independence. There will be a social hour after the service.
