Margaret "Toto" Elaine Johnson, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend, passed away on August 9, 2023. She was 76 years old.
She was born on December 1st, 1946, in a humble farmhouse in Madison, Missouri.
Margaret worked 17 years as a Tax Examiner for the IRS, where she displayed not only her exceptional attention to detail but also her unwavering commitment to fairness. She approached her work with diligence and integrity, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues. Margaret's meticulous nature carried over into all aspects of her life. She meticulously planned each day and approached every task with a sense of purpose.
Education held great importance to Margaret. She graduated from East High School and later attended her local community college in the Kansas City area. Her thirst for knowledge and dedication to personal growth were traits that endeared her to everyone around her. She was always eager to share what she had learned and gently pushed those close to her to reach their full potential.
Margaret's remarkable maternal qualities extended beyond her immediate family. Like a mother figure to all who came into her life, she embraced each person with open arms. Margaret had an incredible ability to bring out the best in others and provide guidance when needed most. She was truly a teacher at heart.
Beyond her professional accomplishments and nurturing nature, Margaret possessed a wonderful sense of humor. Fondly remembered by her grandchildren for playfully referring to ornery people as "hooligans," she brought laughter and joy into their lives. Margaret's quick wit and playful spirit illuminated the room, making every moment spent with her cherished.
In her spare time, Margaret pursued various artistic endeavors, including crafting, sewing, and cross-stitching. These creative outlets allowed her to express her personality and bring beauty into the world. Her crafts brought joy to all who received them.
Margaret's proudest achievements extended beyond her professional life. She dedicated 27 years of her life to volunteering in the Boy Scouts of America, leaving an indelible impact on countless young lives. She was an Honored Woman in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and chose the name Spirit of the White Buffalo, a recognition that reflected her deep connection with nature and commitment to service. She also received the prestigious Silver Beaver award for her outstanding contributions to scouting.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband; Robert "Bob" Johnson, her father; Max Cottingham Meals, her brother; Harold Meals, and her beloved niece; Christy Mitchum Meals (who was like a daughter).
She leaves behind cherished memories for her surviving family members: mother Betty Meals, brother Sam Meals, son Derek Johnson (Deanna), granddaughter Chloe Trimble, grandsons Jakob Johnson and Justen Johnson, great-grandson Stephen Trimble, nephew Lucas Meals (who was like a son), niece Samantha Twyman, and four great nieces and nephews. Their lives were forever enriched by Margaret's unconditional love, generosity, and unwavering support.
A visitation will be held at Speaks Suburban Chapel (18020 E 39th St S Independence, MO 64055) from 1-2pm on Sunday, August 13, 2023. The service will begin immediately following the visitation at 2pm. Margaret will be laid to rest on Monday, August 14, 2023 at Woodlawn Cemetery at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Margaret's honor to Cancer Action (105 Berkley Suite 100 Overland Park, KS 66212).
