Marilyn Louise Brittingham Mitchell was born in Butler, Missouri, on August 11, 1950, the third of six children of Stanley Lee and Bertha Louise Brittingham. She passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, at Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri, on Monday, August 24, 2026, at the age of 76.
Marilyn was a loving and devoted mother to her daughter, Shelley Mitchell, with whom she shared a close, enduring bond throughout her life.
Marilyn began working at 16 for Melba Bowen at Bowen’s clothing store in Nevada, Missouri. She graduated from Nevada High School in 1968. After graduation, she worked at JCPenney on the Nevada Square, where she especially enjoyed designing window displays. When Walmart opened in Nevada in the fall of 1971, Marilyn was hired as the jewelry department manager.
Marilyn found her professional calling in the mid-1970s, when Walmart opened its Nevada pharmacy, and she began working as a pharmacy technician. She continued her pharmacy career at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center in Columbia, Missouri, and later at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
Marilyn took pride in her accomplishments and remained dedicated throughout her working life until her retirement. As she often said, “I worked all my life!”
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Bertha Brittingham; her brother, Marty; her sister, Barbara; and her husband, Robert “Bob” Steinberg.
She is survived by her daughter, Shelley; her sister, Kaye; her brothers, Galen (Kathy) and Thurman (Lynda); her brother-in-law, Robert; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
A private family celebration of life will be held in Marilyn's honor.
Tribute donations are kindly suggested to Kansas City Hospice House in Marilyn’s name, whose staff provided compassionate care that comforted Marilyn and her family during her final days.
