Edwin Martin

April 9, 1939 — June 21, 2013

We have lost a very special man. Edwin Dennis Martin, 74, passed from this earth and joined his family in heaven. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 26 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, MO. A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the East Alton Community of Christ, 16999 E. 23rd Street (23rd & RD Mize Rd.) Independence, MO. Donations may be made to Outreach International or Community Services League. Ed was born in Independence, MO and graduated from William Chrisman High School and Central Missouri State College (UCM). He taught Junior High students for 37 years, the last 28 at Jim Bridger Junior High School in Independence. Ed was very active in the community and at the East Alton Community of Christ congregation. He volunteered at Community Services League where he and his wife were honored in 2010 for their contributions. He was active in Youth Friends, MO Against the Death Penalty, Amnesty International, Bread for the World, Faith Friends and Outreach International. Ed shared his home with family, friends, the homeless, and visiting church members from Haiti, Russia, and most often Africa. He was a voice for the poor and voiceless, calling others to task at church, city council meetings or wherever there was need. His love was all encompassing. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him or was helped by his generosity. Ed is survived by his wife Nancy of Lake Tapawingo, daughter Cindi Rogers and her husband Jeff of Independence, MO, son Stephen of Excelsior Springs, MO, step daughter Julie Carter of Lake Tapawingo, step son Mark Bailey and his wife Shannon of San Francisco, CA, brother, Glenn Martin and his wife Carol of Lake Tapawingo and granddaughters Bailey and Allison Carter.
