James Edward Martin, 78, Independence, MO, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2011.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church; 10113 E. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO. Burial to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Carson-Speaks Chapel; 1501 W. Lexington Ave, Independence, MO with a rosary said at 7:00 p.m.

James was born July 9, 1933 in Independence, MO the son of Phillip Joseph and Helena (Wilkerson) Martin. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving from 1953 to 1957. James retired as an engineering supervisor from the Department of Veteran Affairs Office after 33 years of service. Upon his retirement he received a Commendation for his exceptional contributions and service to the V.A. Medical Center. James served as past president of A.F.G.E. Local #2663. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church. James also enjoyed volunteering with the National Veterans Wheelchair Games and with “Stand Down”, which provides service to homeless veterans. He was an avid Royals and Chiefs fan and never missed his children or grandchildren’s sporting events.

James was recently preceded in death by his loving wife Faye Martin on August 10, 2011; two sisters; one brother and his parents.

Survivors include his children Wendy Ragsdale and husband Bill, Lori Lamanno and husband Tony, Brian Martin; grandchildren Amanda, Elvis, Amber, Austin, Aiden; great-grandchildren Joshua, Amaya, Braydon; and numerous nieces, nephews and family.
