Independence

Mary Elnora Bridges, a beloved member of the Independence community, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2023, in Harrisonville, Missouri. Born on July 26, 1930, in Independence, Missouri, Mary was the daughter of Martin and Pearl (Ingmire) Allen.

While mostly devoting her time to the care of her loving husband, William Bridges, and children, for a time, Mary worked in circulation for the Independence Examiner, where she dedicated her time and energy to ensuring that the news reached the residents of Independence. Her commitment to her work and her warm personality made her a beloved figure among colleagues.

Education played an important role in Mary's life, and she was a proud graduate of William Crisman High school. She cherished the memories she made during her time there and valued the friendships she formed with her classmates.

Beyond her professional achievements and educational pursuits, Mary had a passion for life that extended into her hobbies and interests. She especially loved going to the boats, where she found joy and excitement in partaking in many of the forms of enjoyments the casinos offered. Whether it was playing games or simply taking in the vibrant atmosphere, Mary embraced every moment spent there. Mary was also an active member of the Salvation Army’s Woman’s Home League.  Along with her husband William, she served as a member of the S.A.C., providing emergency relief services when their community was devastated by natural disasters.

Family meant everything to Mary. She adored her children Rick (Colleen) Bridges, Robin (Keith) Mason, Ronald (Karen) Bridges, Rebecca (Kevin) Obermiller, as well as her grandchildren Kelli (Daniel) Guy, Greg (Lori) Smith, Jenna (David) Gielan, Rachelle (Brian) Fiene, and Ashley (Zach) Stockstill. Mary was also blessed with great-grandchildren Abigail Smith, Samantha Smith, Hendrix Smith, Layla Smith, D.J. Guy, Madison Guy, Noah Gielan, Miles Gielan, Ethan Fiene, Camden Fiene, Sofia Fiene, Cade Stockstill, and Blayke Stockstill, who brought immense joy into her life. The love she shared with them knew no bounds. In addition to her immediate family members, Mary is survived by her sisters Janet Hamilton and Patty Wallace, both of whom shared a deep and unbreakable bond with her. Mary's siblings were an integral part of her life, supporting and comforting her throughout the years. Mary was preceded in passing by her father and mother, Martin and Pearl Allen, and her grandson, Brandon Fugitt.

To honor Mary's memory, a series of services will take place at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence on September 12, 2023. The visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 pm, with an interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
