Obituary

Mary M. (Grayer) Huffman, 102, of Independence Missouri, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 12, 2026, at Blue Hills Rest Home.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Chapel.

Mary was born February 8, 1923, to Kinzy Grayer Sr. and Darcy Louzella (Cottinghham) Grayer in Independence, MO, and lived in Independence her entire life. She attended school and graduated in 1941 from William Chrisman High School in Independence.

She was united in Marriage to Raymond J. Huffman, November 8, 1941. They were married 64 years until Raymond’s death, in 2006.

She loved going to Lake of the Ozarks, boating, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.

Many fun times and memories were made playing cards and working puzzles. She loved playing double Solitaire while having her country music cranked up on the radio and often singing out loud! She didn't mind slapping your hand or cards out of the way if got in her way of making a play!

Her favorite place at home was sitting at the kitchen table, and loved watching old westerns. We all gathered there when we visited.

She was a member of Lazy Acres Baptist Church in Edwards, MO, and loved teaching vacation bible school in the summer.

Mary worked at Montgomery Ward, Dolly Madison Bakery, Lake City Ammunition Plant in Independence, and retired from Tasty Bread Bakery.

She was a caregiver, a homebody and a hard worker. She loved her family more than anything else and treasured any time she could spend with them.

She always put others first and managed by doing without things she needed herself. She was lovingly known as “GG”

Mary was a good storyteller and had a lot of them! One of her favorite sayings was, “What a Life!”

Many thanks to Faith Hospice, Marie Dunham, Sarah White and the wonderful staff at Blue Hills Rest home, who treated Mom with compassion and respect.

Survivors include Gale Anderton (Bob), and Joe Huffman, both of Independence MO, 7 grandchildren, Heather Creek Taylor (Steve), Clint Creek, (Lisa), Heath Creek (Sara), Brandon Blancas, Kayla Huffman Dunfield (Mike), Alisha Anderton (Zach Schulenberg), Jamie Wright (Keven), 21 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson.

In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Kinzy Grayer Jr, 5 sisters, Darcy Temple, Betty Rice, Norma Hightower, Martha Parker, Virginia Pate, 1 grandchild, 2 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
