Mary Ellen Swift

July 22, 1980 — February 22, 2026

Mary Ellen Swift passed away on February 22, 2026, in Independence, Missouri at the young age of 45. Born on July 22, 1980, in Kansas City, Missouri, Mary grew up Lathrop, where she graduated from Lathrop High School.

Her journey took her from the Midwest to the Virgin Islands, where on a whim, she embarked on a new adventure with friends, later starting a family in that beautiful setting. Eventually, seeking to reconnect with her roots, she moved back to Kansas City to be closer to her family and friends.

Mary was known for being sassy, direct, hardworking, and caring. Those who worked alongside her for over 12 years at Americo Insurance Company regarded her as a backbone of the organization. Her colleagues looked up to her not only for her professionalism but also for her strong presence that brought an element of stability to the workplace.

Mary had a multitude of hobbies and interests that showcased her creativity and zest for life. A talented artist, she loved to paint, draw, and color, eagerly anticipating Halloween each year when she could transform her daughters’ faces into works of art. Her interests were diverse; she enjoyed solving puzzles, immersing herself in the thrilling narratives of Stephen King novels, and attending concerts. She cherished experiences such as going to the dinner movie theater, navigating escape rooms, and participating in the annual celebrity baseball game alongside friends and family. The Fourth of July was a favorite celebration of hers, and she looked forward to the arrival of fall, particularly anything pumpkin-flavored.

Mary was a true animal lover, affectionately dubbed the "cat lady," as she cared for four cats of her own and readily took in many strays. Her nurturing spirit extended to all areas of her life, and her legacy will remain with those she touched.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Lillian and Evelyn Peel; parents, James and Diane (Nelson) Swift; sisters, Teri Petifurd (Gary) and Micki Swift, and nephew, Nathanial.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jared Peel.

In honoring her memory, a Celebration of Life visitation will be held on February 27, 2026, at Carson-Speaks Chapel located at 1501 W Lexington Ave, Independence, MO 64052, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
