Matthew Lee Smith, 56 of Overland Park, KS passed away Tuesday morning, April 14, 2026 at the Kansas City Hospice House. He was a devoted husband, a proud father and a loyal friend. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, April 24, 2026 at Church of the Ascension 9510 W 127th St, Overland Park, KS 66213 with burial to follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Raytown, MO. The family will greet friends from 9:00 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Donations may be made to his children, Rylie and Reagan Smith’s, education expenses in care of the family.
Matt was born March 5, 1970, in Independence, MO to Gerald E. and Janita (Fann) Smith and was a lifelong area resident. He had worked in the Optical field for many years and was most recently a Brand Sales Specialist for Essilor of America. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, baseball, golf, and coaching his daughter’s softball team. Whether at work or in his personal life, Matt was the kind of man who would give his shirt off his back without hesitation to help someone out, especially if you had a home project.
He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Overland Park and had also attended Church of Ascension Catholic Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne (Russell) married 29 years on April 12; He is also survived by 2 children, Rylie and Reagan Smith, 2 brothers, Anthony Smith (Melissa) of Lone Jack, MO and Christopher Smith of Independence, MO; Along with several nieces & nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents Gerald Smith and Janita Smith.
