Durward O. “Mac” McConnell, 90, Independence, MO passed away November 2, 2010 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron, MO.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E. 39th St. Independence, MO. Burial to follow at Mound Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 AM, Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Boy Scouts of America.
Mac was born July 25, 1920 in Independence, MO the son of Harland A. and Zelma “Faye” (Filson) McConnell. He became a Boy Scout at the age of 11 and was active with the Scouts until 2005 (73 years). He was a member of the Mic-O-Say Tribe and had received the Silver Beaver Award. Mac was a 1938 graduate of William Chrisman High School where he was in the R.O.T.C. and loved playing the trumpet. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 during WWII and was stationed in Northern Ireland with the 55th Medical Battalion. Mac was among the brave men who stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day. Through his tour of duty with the Army, he shared his love of the Scouts with everyone he interacted with. He retired from military duty in 1981 after 38 years, with the rank of Sgt. Major. Mac also retired from ARMCO Steel after 38 years in 1983. He was a member of the Liberty Street Community of Christ Church.
Mac was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.
Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Eunice Sharp McConnell; daughter, Kathi Schweiger; grandchildren, Chad and Amy and their families.
