Harriet Sue McConnell, 85, passed away on October 16, 2020 in Lee’s Summit, MO.
Sue, as she was known, was born on May 26, 1935, in Springfield, MO, the daughter of Leonard Peace and Beulah Fern Cook Peace. She graduated from Springfield High School in the class of 1953, where she was a member of the Kiltie Drum & Bugle Corps. After graduating, she went to work for Western Union in Carthage as a tickertape reader. She was transferred to the Independence area, where she raised her four children. In the early 1980s, she took a position with the US Treasury Department, and retired from there in 2007.
Sue had a great passion for life. Her pastimes included drinking black Folgers coffee from sunrise to sunset, shopping for bargains, reading, and traveling around the country in a pop-up camper or her T-Bird convertible. She felt most rejuvenated when she was near a body of water; the family recalls many happy memories spent with her soaking up some sun or listening to the lapping waters at Table Rock Lake or the beaches in Florida. She would never pass up the chance to catch a sports game, whether it was the KC Chiefs, the KC Royals, or even a round of golf. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, and she led a kind, loving life.
Her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to her. Gatherings were always enhanced by her world-famous broccoli cheese casseroles, or chocolate chip pudding cake if it was an extra-special occasion. She had a warm, gentle, soft-spoken personality, and was always so welcoming and caring to whomever she encountered.
Sue is survived by her four children: Jeffrey (Becky) McConnell of Independence, Jennifer McConnell Holmes (Ken) of Independence, Jan (Larry) Alderman of Kansas City, and Annie (Robby) Klim of Lee’s Summit; grandchildren: Casey (J) Hartsock, Kristen (Daniel) Corlett, Jessica Holmes, Greg (Echo) McConnell, Rebekah (Travis) Brinkerhoff, Elisabeth (Chris Billups) McConnell, Jared (Crystin) Alderman, Chance Alderman, Cameron Klim, and Brendan Klim; great-grandchildren: Allie & Abbie Hartsock, Kevin Trotter, Corbin McConnell, Rowan Billups, and Layne Alderman; siblings: Robert Peace of Springfield, Rachel (Gee) Gabbert of Jacksonville, FL, and David (Song Cho) Peace of Springfield; sister-in-law Etta Peace; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Leonard and Beulah Peace; siblings Betty Lou (Glenn) Fetter, Anne (Joe) Tamalis, and Jack Peace.
Memorial services are pending at this time and will be announced at a later date.
In honor of Sue, contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
