Raymond E. McConnell, 89, of Independence, MO passed away Monday, April 6, 2015. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 9th at Carson Speaks Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 10th at the chapel. Burial will be at Mound Grove Cemetery, Independence, MO.
Raymond was born March 16, 1926 in Kansas City, MO as one of two sons of Charles E. and Willie R. (Winters) McConnell. He attended East High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy and proudly serving his country on the USS Lardner during WWII. He married his beloved Helen (Latier) on October 27, 1951 and together they raised three daughters. Raymond was an employee of the Floor Layers Local #1179 until his retirement in 1988. He was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed taking his family on vacations. He also enjoyed playing softball as a catcher and later coached his grandchildren’s teams. He bowled for numerous leagues and tournaments as well as golfed and was Marshal at the Royal Meadows Golf Course. His family remembers him as competitive but a good sportsman who not only loved the game but more so loved the people who played the game.
He is survived by daughter, Bonnie Clark (Roy) of Blue Springs, MO; daughter, Brenda McConnell of Independence, MO; son-in-law, Don Datweiler; grandson, Danny Datweiler (Irene) of Independence, MO; granddaughter, Dixie Hays (Doug) Blue Springs, MO; grandson, Nathan Chapman (Tanya Hufford) of Lakewood, CO; grandson, Benjamin Chapman (Julia) of Firestone, CO; six great grandchildren and two more expected soon; one great great granddaughter; and numerous adopted granddaughters on the softball field. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife; brother, Don McConnell; and daughter, Linda Datweiler.
