Alfred Mchenry

June 17, 1907 — April 9, 2010

Mr. McHenry passed away Friday, April 9 at his home in Peoria, Arizona. Funeral service for Alfred Earl McHenry will be 10:00 am Wednesday, April 14 at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence. He was born July 18, 1907 in Potter, Kansas to Grover O. and Clemma (Claxton) McHenry. Earl was reared in Independence and resided there until his retirement in 1986, when he moved to Arizona; first to Sun City and subsequently to Peoria. He was married to Mary Virginia Powell, mother of his son, Richard, an Anglican priest in Texas. Following Virginia’s death in 1967, Earl was married to Sarah Rebecca Peters, who also preceded him in death. Earl began his business career in a small country grocery store on Truman Road (then Spring Branch) east of Independence. Following World War II, he opened an appliance store in Independence, expanding and relocating in Englewood. Eventually two more stores were added: one in Raytown, the other in Antioch. Earl was active in civic and community betterment, through Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Englewood Business Association and serving as sometime Mayor of Englewood. He became a member of First Presbyterian church in 1946, serving several terms on the Board of Trustees and the church Session. In addition to his son, Fr. Richard, Earl is survived by three nieces: Sandra McHenry, Bonnie Grimm, and Marguerite Zumwalt, all of Independence, plus a host of extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or a charity of choice. Pallbearers will be: Arthur Kelley, Don Cordes, Bill Esry, Jim Hayward, John Olivarez and Chris Peters. The family will receive visitors in The Church Parlor immediately following the service. Burial will be at the family plot in Woodlawn Cemetery.
