Mabel McKevit, 99, of Independence, MO passed away March 23, 2008 at Rosewood Health Center. A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Services at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 28, at the chapel with burial to follow at Floral Hills Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. Contributions may be made to the Graceland University School of Nursing, 1401 West Truman Road, Independence, MO 64050 or a charity of your choice. Mabel was born April 9, 1908 in Kimball, Ontario, Canada to Isaac and Margaret (Johnston) Andrew. She graduated from Walkerville High School in Windsor, Ontario. In 1928, she came to Independence where she went on to attend and receive her nursing degree from the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital School of Nursing. Mabel was a member of the Professional Nurses Association, Graceland Mothers and American Business Women. Along side her husband Oliver, she helped run what many considered to be the best donut shop in the Kansas City area, McKevit’s Donuts. Mabel loved reading and she was always on the “go”. She was also a long time member of the Community of Christ Church. Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Llewellyn McKevit in 1971. She is survived by one daughter, Margaret McKevit of New Orleans, Louisiana; one sister, Janet Tye of Petrolia, Ontario, Canada; one brother, Leslie Andrew of Corunna, Ontario, Canada; as well as other loving family and friends.
