Harry Dayton McPherson, 97, of Odessa, MO passed away Friday, May 15, 2009 at The Groves. A visitation will be from 1-2:00 PM Tuesday, May 19 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, with services beginning at 2:00 PM; burial at Mound Grove Cemetery. Contributions are suggested to Outreach International, Rosewood at The Groves, and/or the Odessa Senior Center.
Dayton was born on Nov. 12, 1911 in McKenzie, AL, the fourth of six children to Jason Briggs McPherson and Emma Lee Patrick McPherson. In 1930 he graduated from William Chrisman High School. He was united in marriage to Carmen Guthrie on June 12, 1935 and together raised one daughter. Dayton was employed by Standard Oil as a boilermaker for 34 years prior to his retirement in 1974. He was a member of the Cornerstone Congregation of Community of Christ for many years, and then faithfully attended church every Sunday in Odessa and during his time at The Groves. He was a loyal 63-year member of the Masonic Lodge #76. In his spare time, Dayton enjoyed fishing, hunting, and traveling with the Tag Along Trailer Gang.
Dayton was preceded in death by his wife Carmen, and siblings: Roberta, Johnnie, Maggie Lee, Jamie, and Billy. He is survived by his daughter, Lila L. Gardner and husband Bruce of Macomb, IL; granddaughter, Kathleen Gardner-Cole and her husband Richard of San Antonio, TX; and four great-granddaughters, Miranda, Cassandra, Audrey, and Addison Cole.
