Donald  "Don" Mercer

Donald Mercer, 83, of Independence, MO passed away November 17, 2015. A memorial service will take place at 2:00 p.m. followed by a visitation on, Sunday, November 22, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. Interment of his urn will take place at Colfax Cemetery in Colfax, IA. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church of Independence, MO. Don was born April 10, 1932 in Salina, KS to Ernest and Florence Mercer. He graduated high school in Colfax, IA and then served two years in the U.S. Army. He was employed by AT&T in Des Moines, IA and Kansas City, MO, retiring in 1989. Don enjoyed photography, woodworking and doing volunteer work. Although suffering a severe stroke in 1999, he retained his sense of humor and joy of living. Don was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Leslie Mercer. He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Kevin and Kent Mercer of Independence; sister, Eleanor Pratt of Raytown, MO; brother, Robert Mercer of Fairfield, IL; and other family members and friends.
