Velva Merriott

August 11, 1928 — April 21, 2010

Velva Jane Smith-Merriott, 81, of Buckner, MO went to meet her heavenly father on April 21, 2010. She died at her home surrounded by her family after her long battle with cancer. Visitation will be Sunday, April 25 from 6-8:00 PM at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave, Independence. Services will be at 10:00 AM Monday, April 26 at the chapel; burial at Blue Springs Cemetery, Reverend Richard Williams, officiating.
Mrs. Merriottt was born August 11, 1928 in Melvern, KS and lived most of her life in the Kansas City Metro area. Her family wrote: “Velva loved crafts, sewing, baseball, bingo and blue grass music festivals. She also enjoyed sharing her faith and love of God with everyone she met. She will be missed greatly by her family and everyone who knew her. To know her was to love her.”
Velva was preceded in death by her husband Charles Jackson Merriott; grandson Eddie Lee Goza, Jr.; four sisters; and three brothers. She is survived by her son Jack (Valerie) Merriott; daughter Kathy (Harv) Merriott-Monroe; daughter Sheryl (Gary) Frazier; and daughter Pamela (Dane) Baker; sister Margaret (Richard) Hugill; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Crossroads Hospice Group for the compassion and support during the last days of Velva’s life. Donations may be made to Cancer Action of Kansas City.
