It is with sorrow and joy we announce the passing of Michael Ray Smith. As much as he will be missed, we know he became whole and at peace as the angels guided him to The Father, and into his heavenly home on April 25, 2026.
Michael was born on November 23, 1958, in Kansas City MO to Kenneth J Smith and Dorothy Ann (Davis) Smith. He worked in the family business, Builder’s Service, for many years and ended his work career as a fraud specialist at Synchrony Financial.
After meeting his wife, Trudy, at a night school class, their friendship soon bloomed into a permanent, loving relationship. They had many adventures during their time together. Michael was eager and thrilled about the trips and cruises he and Trudy took. Hawaii and Disney World were at the top of his list of favorites.
To know Michael was to know he was overflowing with trivia tidbits, WWII being his biggest cache of information. Playing golf was something he loved and looked forward to getting on the course when he could. He enjoyed reading, watching movies, and could recount each one to you in detail and with enthusiasm. He also liked playing card(s) or board games, which some thought he won a bit too often.
His kindness and compassion were evident to all. He always was willing to help someone in need. When in Benton House Michael was given a small stuffed bear. He told Trudy all children should have a stuffed bear. That started the campaign of the stuffed animal drive, which resulted in dozens upon dozens of new stuffed toys being donated in his honor to Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Trudy remembers all the little things he did for her, like getting the spiders even though he hated them and was a bit afraid of them himself. He also took care of her in countless other ways. Her words have continually been, “he was so good to me.”
He is survived by his love, and wife of 39 years, Trudy L. Smith. Brother William D. Smith (Lisa), 2 nephews, a niece, as well as several cousins.
Michael was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents; father, Kenneth J. Smith; mother, Dorothy Ann (Davis) Smith; and brother Kenneth D. Smith.
Michael’s earthly remains will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens in a small, private service.
Trudy would like to share a few of their favorite Bible Verses:
“He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:29-31
“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand...For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, Saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’ Isaiah 41:10, 13
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
