Lorene Mitchell, 89, of Independence, MO passed away Wednesday, February 20th 2013. A visitation will be held from 10:00- 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 28st at First Christian Church; 125 S Pleasant St, Independence, MO. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be held at Leavenworth National Cemetery at a later date.
Lorene was born September 16th 1923 to Lorenzo and Daisy Hazel (Wells) Caldwell in Springfield, MO. After high school she enlisted in the Marines during World War II where she was a Corporal in the Supply Depot packing for service men at war. She married the love of her life, John Alexander Mitchell on April 13th 1968. He later passed in October of 1977. Lorene worked as an office manager for an optometrist for many years. She attended First Christian Church and, because of her faith, was actively involved with Tabitha’s Closet and many other outreach groups that supported both women and children; including Optimist Club and Boy Scouts of America groups. Lorene is described as amazingly smart, an avid reader, and a dedicated bridge player. She is loved and will be missed.
She is survived by sister, Ethel Meyer; nieces, Sally Schwenk and Tacy; and nephew Reed Fullerton. Lorene was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband and sister in law, Henrietta Fullerton.
