Thomas Mura

April 8, 1946 — April 14, 2011

Tom passed away with love at home with his wife Pat, whom he called the love of his life and soul mate, and his son Jonathan (Jon), at his side on April 14, 2011.

Tom was a kind and gentle man who was known as one of the nicest guys you would ever meet, who always strived to do the right thing. His mild and peaceful manner was his strength.

Like his father and mother before him, he has donated his body to the University of Kansas Medical Center for research and teaching in hopes that he can help others to live better lives.

Tom graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1964. He was a Man for Others, dedicating his life to the Jesuit motto, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam – For The Greater Glory of God. After retirement from USDA, he volunteered at Rockhurst to help out when needed.

Tom graduated from Rockhurst College in 1968 with a BSBA, Accounting Major. He worked for more than 36 years at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Kansas City, Missouri until he retired in 2002. He had many accomplishments during his 36 years at USDA and was well liked and respected by the people that knew him.

He is lovingly survived by his children Tom Mura, Jon Mura, Amy Wissel, Alison Woerman, Andrea Elliott, Ashley Doll and Amber Stabler; his (favorite) sister, Janie; his brothers, Jim and Larry; and all of his grandchildren. He loved them all very much.

He leaves many family and friends who loved him, and also leaves the family dogs, Sissy and Peanut, who stayed by his side and were devoted to him.

He loved sunsets, reading books, and camping and fishing with Pat and Jon every summer at Stockton Lake, Missouri. His ashes will eventually be joined with Pat’s and together their ashes will be laid to rest together at Stockton Lake.

In lieu of flowers and with Tom’s long standing commitment to Rockhurst High School, the Mura Family requests contributions to Rockhurst High School in care of the Mura Family Scholarship Fund, at Rockhurst High School, 9301 State Line Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64114-3299, attention Mr. Laurence Freeman, Chief Advancement Officer. A Memorial Mass to celebrate Tom’s life will be at Rockhurst High School’s Chapel of the Sacred Heart on Thursday, April 28, 2011, at 6:00 p.m. AMDG
