Nancy Hoffman, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2026, in the comforting care of John Knox Memory Care. She was born on April 2, 1941, in San Diego, California, to Jason “Ernie” Elrod and Bernice M. Ross. Later, Jason, “Ernie” married Dorothy Brotherton bringing lasting presence to the family.
Nancy was a woman of immeasurable kindness, known for her gentle demeanor, intelligence, and grace. She graduated from high school in 1959 and pursued an education in nursing at the College of Dupage, receiving her associate’s degree in 1974. Her dedication to healthcare and learning led her to further her studies, culminating in a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1994.
Nancy began her career at Sears Roebuck, where she broke new ground by digitizing financial records. However, it was her deep-seated passion for nursing that brought her back to school and into the field of healthcare. She briefly worked in a hospital setting before relocating to the Lake of the Ozarks to be nearer to her family, where she served as a community health nurse for Camden County. Her dedication to women’s and children’s health was unwavering, and she held the position of Deputy Director at the Center for Health Information Management and Epidemiology from 1999 to 2004. Nancy was also a valued consultant for the Missouri Department of Health and played a significant role in developing the Missouri Health Information Technology Plan. One of her career highlights was participating in a nursing exchange mission to China in 1992.
On April 16, 1966, Nancy married William F. Hoffman, Jr., with whom she shared 37 wonderful years until his passing. Together, they raised three children, Kent (Jennifer) Hoffman of Oak Grove, Missouri, Terri Hoffman, MD, of Tyler, Texas, William “Dustin” Hoffman (deceased, formerly of Raytown, Missouri). Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, Clayton Hoffman and family, Alexis Hoffman, and Miles Hoffman, multiple nieces and nephews.
Nancy’s life was filled with adventure and community service. She was a devoted member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jefferson City, where she led adult Sunday school classes and prayer groups. Her contributions were instrumental in the development of the church’s prayer garden. Her love for travel took her on journeys across the globe, including to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Peru, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, and on a memorable safari with Jerry and Jan Elrod,
In addition to her children and grandchildren, Nancy is survived by her mother Dorothy Elrod of Independence, Missouri, her siblings, Jerry (Jan) Elrod of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and David (Carol) Hatela of Blue Springs, Missouri. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband William F. Hoffman, Jr., and her son, William “Dustin” Hoffman.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate care team at John Knox Village Memory Care, Hospice by John Knox Village, and Dr. Kate Twenter for their exceptional support and kindness.
In honor of Nancy’s life and her spirit of giving, contributions may be made to Hospice by John Knox Village or Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jefferson City, Missouri. Her memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved her.
